변경 감지(Dirty Checking) 와 병합(merge)#
JPA를 사용하며 변경감지와 병합의 차이를 모르게 되면 많은 시간을 허비하게 되며, 정말 중요한 내용이니 꼭 이해 하고 넘어가야합니다.
과거 Order 엔티티에서 취소를 구현했을때, 값을 수정하였지만 따로 업데이트에 대한 쿼리를 실행하지 않았지만 커밋 시점에 update가 되었던것을 확인 했었습니다.
JPA에서는 플러시를 할때 변경 감지가 일어납니다.

기본 메커니즘은 이렇게 흘러가지만, 문제는 준영속 엔티티일 경우 일어납니다.
준영속 엔티티#
영속성 컨텍스트가 더는 관리하지 않는 엔티티를 말합니다.
여기서는 itemService.saveItem(book)에서 수정을 시도하는 Book객체 입니다.
Book 객체는 이미 DB에 한번 저장되어서 식별자가 존재 합니다. 이렇게 임의로 만들어낸 엔티티도 기존 식별자를 가지고 있으면 준영속 엔티티로 볼 수 있습니다.

준영속 엔티티의 문제는 JPA가 관리하지 않기 때문에 생성된 객체를 변경하여도 변경 감지(Dirty Checking)가 일어나지 않습니다.
준영속 엔티티를 수정하는 2가지 방법#

itemRepository.findOne()로 불러와 영속성 컨텍스트에 퍼올리고 세팅을 하기 때문에 따로 저장이나 업데이트를 처리하지 않아도 트랜잭션이 커밋되는 시점에 플러시가 일어나며 변경감지를 통해 업데이트 됩니다.
변경 감지(Dirty Checking)#
병합은 준영속 상태의 엔티티를 영속 상태로 변경할 때 사용하는 기능입니다.

영속성 컨텍스트 또는 DB를 뒤져가지고 같은 식별자로 찾고 파라미터로 넘어온 엔티티로 바꿔치합니다.

그런데 두개의 방법에 매커니즘의 차이가 있습니다.
병합 동작 방식#
- merge()를 실행한다.
- 파라미터로 넘어온 준영속 엔티티의 식별자 값으로 1차 캐이세어 엔테테 조회.
- 우선 1차 캐시에서 찾고 없으면 DB에서 조회하여 1차 캐시에 저장
- 조회한 영속 엔티티(mergeMember)에 member 엔티티의 값을 채워 넣는다.
- 이때 mergeMember의 “회원1” 이라는 이름이 “회원명변경” 으로 변경됨.
- 영속 상태인 mergeMember를 반환한다.

병합시 동작방식을 간단히 정리#
- 준영속 엔티티의 식별자 값으로 영속 엔티티를 조회한다.
- 영속 엔티티의 값을 준영속 엔티티의 값으로 모두 교체한다.(병합한다.)
- 트랜잭션 커밋 시점에 변경 감지 기능이 동작해서 데이터베이스에 UPDATE SQL이 실행
병합 사용시 주의사항#
변경감지 기능을 사용하면 원하는 속성만 선택해서 변경할 수 있지만, 병합을 사용하면 모든 속성이 변경 됩니다.
병합 시 값이 없으면 null로 업데이트 할 위험도 있다.(병합은 모든 필드 교체!!)
예를 들어 Item은 가격이 한번 책정되면 변경할 수 없다는 요구사항이 있으면, 화면에서 Form에 price의 인풋박스가 없이 업데이트를 진행 하였다고 생각해봅시다.

병합은 모든 컬럼을 업데이트 하기 때문에 null로 넘어온 값 마저도 업데이트 하게됩니다.
Setter 보다 Entity의 method로 사용#

위와 같이 모두 set()을 이용해 수정하는 것보다 수정이라는 의미를 가지는 메서드를 만들어 사용하면 변경을 엔티티에서 하고 변경지점을 통일 시켜 사방팔방 여러곳에서 수정이 발생되는 것을 막아 유지보수에 조금더 도움을 줄 수 있습니다.
컨트롤러에서 엔티티 생성 지양#

이런식으로 컨트롤러에서 새로 엔티티 객체를 새로만들어서 처리 하는 것보다
서비스 계층에 식별자와 변경할 데이터를 명확하게 전달하는게 좋습니다. (파라미터 or dto)
또 트랜잭션이 있는 서비스 계층에서 영속 상태의 엔티티를 조회하고, 엔티티를 직접 변경합니다.

수정할 파라미터가 한눈에 보이기 때문에 유지보수성이 좋아집니다.

결론#
merge는 이러한 위험성을 가지고 있기 때문에 변경감지를 사용하시길 바랍니다.
setter보다 엔티티의 메서드를 통해 파라미터를 받아서 엔티티에서 수정(변경 감지).
